Yes, I said I wasn't blogging today but fortified by Diet Coke and aspirin feel sufficiently outraged to report that Brown is now considering - wait for it - capping trade union donations and changing the political levy system. Effectively, that would be the end of the Labour Party as we know it. And if it happens I will resign my membership. End of story.
This move, originally proposed by the Hayden Phillips enquiry, was vehemently opposed by the PLP and NEC. Now, disgracefully, the furore over David Abrahams is being used as an excuse to revive the idea again. This MUST be nipped in the bud immediately. It's, frankly, a sign of Brown's desperation and I would urge all members, MPs and union activists to mobilise NOW to stop it happening .
Meanwhile back on Planet Zog Roy Hattersley, writing in today's Observer, says his faith in Gordon Brown is " undiminished." He then refers , mysteriously, to a speech made by Brown in "Manchester" on the theme of "Best When We Are Labour." Actually, Roy, the speech was made in Bournemouth in 2003 when Gordon was still grandstanding to the left. Light years ago.......

If the union link goes I am tempted to join you and resign my membership as well.
Come, come! We need to fight to keep it. This is a fight we can and will win, and there's no good us saying what we'll do if we lose!
The ultra left and right have wanted to break the link for years
Should remember that the teachers union (while not affiliated) to the Democrats in the US or British Labour Party still have massive input
Agree with Dunc, there's support for retaining the link from across the party's spectrum (even Luke Akehurst supports it, though his views on the uses to which it should be put differ, I suspect, from ours).
We should fight to keep it.
But we should think about where we go next - just in case.
Any suggestions?
Well I was particularly fed-up yesterday. Not resigning - yet. Nor joining some daft sect. We fight and fight again......
But this doesn't mean there shouldn't be reform of overall party funding....I think its vital.
