Just 53 votes short in Calder ward of WINNING seat from Liberal Democrats. Why? Because our candidate Janet Oosthuysen fought an honest, Real Labour campaign from start to finish. We made ir clear we were not New Labour, we stood up for peace and against racism. Janet, who is an LRC member, stated plainly "Vote Labour - Get A Socialist." Seems to me that it's not a bad slogan toi build on and indeed counsel others to follow.
Elsewhere, our worst vote for decades. No wonder. No time for considered thoughts. Three hours' sleep last night and about to gather for lunchtime wake. But we have plenty to be proud of here. I await the London Mayor result with growing sense of dread......

The odious James Purnell, the uber blairite/tory DWP Secretary has just been interviewed on Channel 4 news, he was completely out of his depth, mucking up his responses and just repeated saying it is all the fault of the global economy. He, like other schoolboy/girl Blairites was clearly over promoted and now times are tougher are being exposed, he should have stayed as the policy wonk he was.
Speaking of policy, bizarrely even more draconian welfare reform is to be announced by the govt next month, yet figures from the main disability welfare charities indicate that most IB claimants will be 1.85 worse off but some severely disabled claimants may lose up to 7.00 pounds a week, maybe more, and an ever more harsh welfare regime. These cuts are much more than the 10p tax allowance abolition, so will there be an outcry over this?

We will lose the severe disability payment which is twelve pounds, if we cannot work under the new regime we will get the £10 back, so we are £2 worse off.
But to get back to the thread, it's a shame many solid and good Labour councilors will lose out because of a Blairite government, which has no idea at all what to do. I hope an early elections and we can start again in say ten or twenty years time, it will take that long for Labour to again be elected.
Robert , it is central to the thread, as you know, N/l are attacking, yes attacking some of the most vulnerable people in the UK, some people are even saying they will end it all. The privatisation of welfare and payment by results will mean incredible pressure on disabled claimants, all done with no extra money from the treasury. Yet apart form occasional mentions on here and by JM the left remains silent, yet there are reams of stuff about the 10p tax issue. Why, is the left making the classic division between the working 'deserving poor and the non working ‘undeserving poor’. people should be valued for who they are. There is now a race to the bottom between NL and the Tories on who can be the toughest on welfare benefits
I don’t think this is going to go away. There are plans for a national demo against the welfare reforms in July and when the general public realises it is geniunely disabled folk who are going to lose out, then like the 10p tax issue came from nowhere, all hell will break out
We need to be making a lot of noise about this now. The policy consultation is too late really, because that's about next year's Queen's Speech, this is about reforms that are being introduced now. We need to make massive fuss. Let's see if we can repeat the 10p tax response on this issue.
Bit late the new work rules come into Force on October 27th 2008
I agree it's late, but let's try and stop them.
"a Blairite government, which has no idea at all what to do"
I'm confused - yet again - surely Blair won you three elections so being a "Blairite government" is "A Good Thing"!
