One of the key policies passed in recent years at Labour Conference was allowing local authorities to build more council homes and freeing them from the current constraints which mean that last year only 375 homes were built. It is a shame it's taken so long for the Government to take note but this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.........

Right, what we really do need is more sink estates full of third generation unemployed NEETS!
If the lumpen proletariat were not subsidised by heavy taxes on the rest of us, then Labour might think about having a welfare policy that didn't promote fecklessness and there would not be such large dole queues.
*splutters*
Grim, did you just say something positive about Gordon Brown?
:op
Ignoring the Anonymous rant, I did indeed say something positive about the Govt's decision to build more council homes. As Tony Benn would say, Tom, it's the policies not the personalities.....the policy was decided several years ago @ Labour Conference. I'm glad the PM has now decided to take it on board.
Sorry to go off topic, but plenty of people are waiting for an LRC statement about the strikes, the SWP line is pathethic, denouncing them and the workers,
anytime soon?
Unless Labour puts money into this, it's just that! words, I do not know of one council at the moment which is not looking at reducing cost, the funding given to councils by government has been cut.
MY council has stated the last time this was said, nope we will stick with housing associations.
This now depends greatly on how this is funded if it's funded out of the council tax then nothing will happen.
I agree with Robert, this does need a direct change of national policy.
Amazing, isn't it - those council estates were so horrible that millions bought the houses. 'Social' housing (ridiculous name) has been made residual by failing to replace them.
