TORIES SHOW THEIR TRUE COLOURS ON THE NHS- NOW LET'S DO THE SAME

It's heartening to note the level of public anger at the lies and distortions being spread in the US about our much-maligned NHS. Like many of you I expect, I've done the Facebook poll bit and delighted to see the Tories exposed in today's Observer as the would-be destroyers of our healthcare system.

Trade unions UNISON and UNITE, whose mmebers make up the vast majority of NHS employees, have launched a new campaign so yes let's all rally round and use this moment in time for a re-stating of the case for the NHS.

But we need to go further. At the forthcoming Labour Party Conference, union leaders and grassroots members need to re-state their opposition to private sector companies winning fat contracts and it's also time to argue for an end to the profiteering of the private drug companies. Yes I love the NHS. I would love it much more if Gordon Brown and Andy Burnham turned their backs on the privatisations which have been so fiercely opposed in recent years by those on the frontline.

Quite right, that Obama should mind his own business, what does he know about the NHS?

President Obama has told Americans he would not use Britain’s “socialised” system as a model.

He also told an audience in Montana yesterday that he would not implement a “big government solution”. Obama said that a government-run system was not being proposed, nor was he seeking a “socialised” system; “I’m not in favour of a British system”.

Oh dear, apparently he knows quite a lot about it!

But labour needs to do what, oh I see telling people how they sold off the cleaning how they sold off so much of the NHS it's hard to find much Labour has not offered to the market, Labour and the Tories have come together once to often for anyone to believe Labour or the Tories. The whole idea labour is a safe keeper of the NHS is a bit of a laugh, Brown has run to the Tories to get his silly ideas past nobody thinks Labour is a socialist party anymore.

Hi DnN,

he also said that he wasn't looking to a 'French
model.' The point he was making was for clear reason political reasons: his proposals are under attack by the nastier sections of the of the Republican right. He therefore has to present any proposals as peculiarly "American' in nature.
Also the fact that Obama doesn't want an NHS style health service doesn't mean the NHS is the wrong model.
And dear boy you are still fighting shy of telling us what your personal preference is for dismantling the NHS and what nasty little two tier system you would put in it's place.
I made the point previously about GBs better record on health. You have no answer to this. Instead selectively quoting Obama.
Do you stand shoulder to shoulder with your more way out right wing colleagues whom your leader has rather meekly called 'eccentric?
Can you be smoked out on this one or will you stick with an understandable political caution as your contempt for our NHS is not exactly politically popular.

Quite right, Robert, and perhaps it might have just the teensiest-weensiest bit to do with why you rparty won three elections in a row. But still, if you insist on going Leftwards Ho! please don't let me hold you up!

There is no perfect health system, but the NHS is certainly a fairer and better model than the American alternative.

The Americans are intrinsically more right -wing and are petrified of what they call 'socialised medicine' - all bound up with the prevailing myths of 'what it means to be American'.

Hi DnN,

see you're still fighting shy of engaging with mainstream left arguments and prefer to respond to arguments on the 'left' that will not recognize the massive improvements this government has made to the NHS. Just look at the new polyclinics. Robert's comments exaggerate the levels of private sector involvement to the point of absurdity. In a phrase 'it's just not true.'

Left-ward ho? What about DnN and his ultra-right buddies who want to create a two tier health service and place new burdens on ordinary working class and middle class people. Right-ward ho..... sorry the electorate will not bite.

Looks like you're plumping for circumspection. Very sensible dear boy. Cat got your tongue or a teensy bit ashamed?
