REFERENDUM CALLS WON'T GO AWAY

Stalinism continues to rule at Number 10. Having had a General Election called off at the last minute, we have now signed up to an EU treaty on which we were promised a referendum. Having been told by a Westminster Scrutiny Committee that the just-signed document was extremely similar to the previous constitution thrown out by France and Denmark, Gordon cracks open the champagne and blithely comments. “It is now time for Europe to move on and devote all our efforts to the issues that matter to the people of Europe - economic growth, jobs, climate change and security,” Oh please, change the bloody record, The "issues that matter to people" are transparency, honesty, and keeping your promises.Oh, and being allowed to vote occasionally. On this issue, David Cameron is I'm afraid right. Brown is "treating people like fools" and the referendum issue will return to haunt him in January when it's debated in Parliament.

Yep. I'm becoming more sceptical as I find out more. I'm sure Europe does a good job in terms of protecting employment rights and the like, but it sure isn't democratic. I was always fairly pro-europe but I think that possibly had something to do with the nut-jobs in the tory party and UKIP who are euro-sceptic.

As I'm sure you know, I'm no fan of the big clunking fist, but I don't think that not having a referendum constitutes Stalinism. This is especially so when we live in a parliamentary, not plebiscitary democracy and the Treaty will be subjected to rigorous parliamentary scrutiny far superior to anything that our pathetic excuse for a national press (no offense to individual NUJ members intended)would allow in a referendum campaign.

The referendum in this country has a short history and the idea that one is 'required' for 'constitutional issues' is just absurd. On that basis we should have had referenda on extending the vote to working class men, to women of any class, the Parliament Act and umpteen other pieces of legislation. The referendum is a device that should be just done away with in this country.

RM, why are you so afraid of ordinary people getting a say in their own futures I, for one, am a socialist because I want to see democracy extended.
