Am out of the house shortly for the first time in days to attend anniversary celebrations of St James's Church in Hebden Bridge. Don't think I can muster Victorian period dress (optional) but certainly have the pallor of those whose lives disrupted by hacking cough for days on end. The church graveyard is a sad testimony to the unhealthy Calder Valley climate and the unhealthy lives of the millworkers who once frequented the portals of St James. Many of the tombstones bear testimony to lives cut short - often pitifullly young. So i will drag myself up the road and spare a thought or two amid the celebrations for those not lucky enough to live in the age of antibiotics and the NHS.
