It doesn't take a genius to work out how the right-wing media would leap upon a Labour candidate calling Gordon Brown " the worst PM ever". So, of course, today the heaps of vitriol poured on the PM by Manish Sood in Norfolk are splashed everywhere.
Several bizarre things about this one. 1. Despite the fact this is a no-hope seat, he presumably had to be interviewed by an NEC panel. 2. The local Party now says they made several attempts to de-select him but "couldn't be bothered" as Labour had no chance. Why did they choose him in the first place? 3. Why would anyone, no matter how disgruntled, set out to scupper the chances of hundreds of other candidates in more marginal seats by launching a personal attack on Brown just 48 hours before a General Election.
Despite it being so late in the day, the Party should have suspended his candidature. In fact, he should never have been a candidate in the first place. And, yes, it does make me wonder why god left candidates like Mark Seddon and Christine Shawcroft never get a look-in while dipsticks like this are allowed to pass muster.

Just so as I have it clear in my mind, are you objecting to what he said, or the fact that he said it out loud? After all, it is an assessment with which many of the, er, 'comrades' would heartily agree, even perhaps, well, you, actually!

The impression I get is that the NEC panel that vets potential candidates is not exactly difficult to pass.
As for the CLP, I would guess that they picked him because he managed to give a decent performance at the Hustings, and it's not until later that it became apparent that he was a bit of a tit.
Not sure that this is necessarily an example of left candidates geting excluded in favour of idiots though, it's likely to be 10 years or more before Labour once again have a shot at winning NW Norfolk, I'd think that a lot of potential candidates would set their sights on a more winnable seat.
DuffandN , it is true I have criticised Brown policy on sundry occasions but I am NOT a PPC and to call him the "worst PM ever" on the eve of a General Election is, well, inaccurate and pretty unhelpful to the Party he is allegedly standing for.
His arguments were also weird to say the least......
NW Norfolk was a Labour seat in 1997.
