Blame the Stubbing Wharf cider festival for a fuzzy tinge to my original thoughts on yesterday's events. But some things are now clear.
Firstly, the turn-out was absolutely terrible. Only 50 percent of the Party and an unbelievably bad eight per cent of the unions voted. Harman isn't going to be DPM after all but Party Chair ( another anti-democratic master-stroke by Gordon) therefore her soft left mood music won't matter that much. Many ( particularly women ) will feel cheated as another white middle-aged man (Jack Straw?) is rewarded with the DPM job.
Cruddas , of course, ruled himself out of that one all along. You could read that as honourable "man of the people " stuff. Maybe. Whatever. The seven weeks of this campaign have been long, long, long. In the end, boring, boring, boring. Harman got my second preference just to keep Johnson out. No illusions. It was the least interesting, least inspiring, Labour election ever. I hope next time we get a real choice.
