What a great day it must have been for Gordon Brown. Imagine waiting 10 years to become Prime Minister - and getting there. For many in the Labour Party, this will also be a great day. Not me. My primary mood is one of apprehension. There are worrying sounds from Brown about governing "in a new way" beyond party politics. Is it me or does that sound like a coalition? And why does the thought of Sir Alan Sugar being one of Brown's advisors scare me witless? Who else is going to be hired- and fired?? One thing's for sure. There will be no room in his Govt of "all the talents" for socialists who desire an alternative way of doing things which is not in the interests of global capitalism. The "talents" Brown will be calling on will not include his comrades on the left.Welcome to Blue Labour.

Probably a rare moment of agreement between us. I, too, worry about this "government of all the talents" guff. I like my politics, and my political parties, to be confrontaional opposites. I want to the chance to choose! There are considerable dangers, it seems to me, in this government of all those with their snouts in the 'centre-ish' of the trough. You on the Left have your nasties waiting their turn, and we on the Right have ours who only prosper when wishy-washy liberal politics rules the day.
I got some good news to report at least. After months of coalition talks, in Wales, We are still going to have Welsh Labour in government, with Plaid as our coalition partners. This is good because the alternative was a Plaid-Tory-Lib Dem coalition, which would have meant, for the first time since 1997, the Tories running an important law-making insitution in Britain.
However that is not going to happen now, and it make things even better, the document that they are agreeing on, is quiet centre-leftish and progressive, even for Welsh Labour.
