As expected, the TUC today backed a GMB motion calling for a referendum on the new EU treaty and urging Ministers to drop the opt-out on the charter of fundamental rights. This will a) fulfil Labour's 2005 election pledge and b) give workers more rights

Now, this is an issue which I think the left are simply wrong about.
We need to be in Europe and encouraging referenda is not a good idea.
Little englandism is not the answer: the simple choice is closer alliance with our European neighbours, or more cosying up to America.
The European social model is still much closer to left-of-centre ideals.
